Competition Time

It's about time we had a little quiz on Ranting Stan - so here goes.

Guess the behaviour.

Behaviour A is legal.
Behaviour B is legal.

Behaviour A will see you persecuted, abused, hounded and demeaned.
Behaviour B will see you praised, celebrated, lauded and feted.

Behaviour A raises billions of pounds net revenue to the NHS each year.
Behaviour B costs millions of pounds net revenue to the NHS each year.

Behaviour A is recognised as a leading cause of lung cancer.
Behaviour B is recognised as a leading cause of throat cancer.

Behaviour A reduces the average male life expectancy by 8-12 years.
Behaviour B reduces the average male life expectancy by 20-33 years.

Behaviour A is subject to increasing regulation to reduce acceptance of the behaviour.
Behaviour B is subject to increasing regulation to increase acceptance of the behaviour.

Behaviour A is ....?
Behaviour B is ....?

Winners will receive nothing except the satisfaction of getting it right.

Sir HM said...

Oh dear ...

dave said...

a = smoking

b = cannabis

i only found this out after reading your site and finding your bias against natures wonder drug LOL

first post but i read your blog a lot...great work stan

Stan said...

Seems like everyone has sussed out that A is smoking.

Remember - both A and B are legal.

Sir HM said...

Is B the use of sunbeds?

Sir HM said...

Chewing tobacco? - and is 'encouraged' in the sense that other forms of nicotine intake are discouraged - so it's encouraged by default?

So you asked a trick question/gave a trick clue?

Stan said...

The throat cancer is a bit misleading as behaviour B is not normally associated with it specifically - but those who indulge in behaviour B also indulge in behaviour that leads to throat cancer.

Any help?

I was right first time Stan, wasn't I - it's bumbanditry. Read:

Average gay life expectancy

Early reports in the 1980's suggested that male homosexuals had an average life expectancy of less than 50 years - more than 20 years less than the overall male population. With the push for "safe" sex and improved treatments for AIDS, one would expect that the life expectancy might have increased since then. However, a Canadian study in 1997 found that male homosexuals have a life expectancy of 20 years less than the general male population (based upon a prevalence of 3% of the male population).1 Using several different measures, including life expectancy determined from obituaries, two large random sexuality surveys (in the USA and Great Britain), and a survey of those never married in Denmark, Sweden, and Norway, indicated an average age of death of less than 50 years old.2 A third study, published in 2002, found that the median age of death of 88 homosexually partnered men was 45 years, while for 118 unpartnered homosexual men it was 46 years.3 This latter study put the average life expectancy of male homosexuals nearly 30 years less than the general male population. Another study showed that, on average, ever-married men outlived the ever-homosexually-partnered by 23 years in Denmark (74 yr. v. 51 yr.), and 25 years in Norway (77 yr. v. 52 yr.) Ever-married women outlived the ever-homosexually-partnered in Denmark by 22 years (78 yr. v. 56 yr.), and in Norway by almost 25 years (81 yr. v. 56 yr.).4

And of course, bumbandits also engage in gobblejobs on each other. Read:

People who have had more than five oral-sex partners in their lifetime are 250% more likely to have throat cancer than those who do not have oral sex, a new study suggests.

The researchers believe this is because oral sex may transmit human papillomavirus (HPV), the virus implicated in the majority of cervical cancers.

The new findings should encourage people to consistently use condoms during oral sex as this could protect against HPV, the team says. Other experts say that the results provide more reason for men to receive the new HPV vaccine.

I hereby claim my non-prize.

I was right the first time you bugger (er - metaphorically, of course). It was the throat cancer bit that threw me.

And of course, we all know that bumbaditry is even being encouraged in schools now - right down to five-year olds.

Sir HM said...

First it was illegal.

Then they made it legal.

Now they're encouraging it, and passing various bits of legislation in its favour, such as lowering the age of bumbandit consent to 16, and pushing it in schools.

Thank God I'm old enough that I'll be dead by the time they work up the nerve to make it compulsory.

You were almot right the first time, Sir HM - but I couldn't allow your first answer as it wasn't strictly correct.

Yes - homosexuality was behaviour B.

I personally think it's disgusting the way this country has persecuted smokers and inflated the harm of cigarettes. It's about time there was a revolt against this persecution.

I used homosexuality as the counter because it demonstrates very ably the hypocrisy of the liberal left position.

I do so like being right.

It's a bit much to expect politically correct language from me as I enlisted at 15 back in the days when drillpigs were correctly named. I'm led to believe they're hardly allowed to raise their voices these days in case the delicate little dears get upset. Here is a joke about drillpigs from my time in the service:

Drillpig sergeant Jones was called to the C.O's office.
"Sergeant, recruit Ponsonby's father has just died. Can you break the news to him. Be gentle: to him it's a tragedy."

"Yes sir, of course sir"

So he calls the entire platoon onto the parade square.

"All right boys, form up in threes.

'Platoon AttenSHUN. All those of you with two living parents, one pace forward, march. PONSONBY, WHERE DO YOU THINK YOU'RE GOING!!!!'"

That about sums up the level of political correctness in the forces of my day.
