Call my bluff

Can anybody honestly say that the unedifying public auction for the support to govern the country from the party the people of Britain least wanted to govern the country is what they want for our future elections?

Because this will what it will be like in the future if we change our electoral system - except it will probably last for weeks or months each time and there will be frequent back room deals during the lifetime of a parliament.

What a system! What a disaster!

How can anyone think this would be a good thing?

Excuse me, under what electoral system did we arrive at the present state of affairs?

I believe that if Cameron gets a chance he should go it alone. Would enough Labour, LibDems and a few of the others actually wish to take the blame for forcing another General Electino?

Anonymous - a hung parliament is alwaus a possibility with the fptp system, but it is less likely. Similarly, an overall majority is always possible with PR, but it is less likely.

The point being that what we are seeing now will become the norm with PR - not the exception. So, I'll ask you, specifically - all this sordid, dodgy dewaling and horse trading; is this the sort of the thing you want to see after every election? Bear in mind that this is just the initial jiggling for a starting position and much much more will happen once parliament has begun.

Pat - yep, that sounds about right.

English Pensioner - Cameron may have to. I don't think the Lib Dems can afford another election which is why they are putting so much effort into this, and I don't think Labour will have the stomach for anything until they have a new leader in place.
