The stable door slowly swings shut ....

... as the horse disappears into the distance.

John Reid announces plans to restrict new immigrants from EU accession countries.

In a written statement to Parliament, Mr Reid said the policy had been a success because migrant workers had filled skills gaps.

If Mr Reid's idea of success is to import 600,000 new immigrants to fill the "skills gaps" when there are 5 million people of working age in this country who are not working, then I'd hate to know what his idea of abject failure is.

But he acknowledged some schools had had to cope with a "significant rise" in pupils, while some councils had reported overcrowding in private housing.

What an incredible understatement that is. It doesn't even begin to tell the real story of the impact this "open door" policy has had.

Here's a quote from a politician who "got it".

But while, to the immigrant, entry to this country was admission to privileges and opportunities eagerly sought, the impact upon the existing population was very different. For reasons which they could not comprehend, and in pursuance of a decision by default, on which they were never consulted, they found themselves made strangers in their own country.

The British government cannot control its borders having signed up to the various EU treaties.

Very true - and other international treaties. I guess Beckett was referring to the EU's external borders rather than the borders of the subjugated nations states that make up the EU. The reality is that what she calls "strong borders" are amongst the most porous in the world. Whether it's Ukrainians coming in over land or Africans landing on the Canaries the EU is utterly incapable of controlling them.
