Anti-smoking police will secretly film you

From The Telegraph.

Thousands of anti-smoking council officers will patrol bars, restaurants and clubs to police England's smoking ban, it was reported today.

Councils have been handed £29.5 million to train existing staff and to recruit dedicated officers in time for the introduction of the ban in July.

So, let me get this straight. They are going to employ thousands of people - "dedicated officers" - to go around pubs, bars, restaurants and clubs looking for people smoking.

And they have to be "trained" to do this?

Anti-smoking staff will be able to hand out £50 on-the-spot fines and will even be allowed to sit among drinkers undercover and film and photograph offenders.

They are going to mingle with innocent, law-abiding people and film and photograph them. Does anyone else think that's a bit of an intrusion? What if they don't just catch someone smoking on their film or photographs, but also catch someone making a sexist or racist remark? Will that person be brought before the thought police?

Presumably, they will sit amongst drinkers and .... drink. In other words, we are spending millions training people and paying them thousands of pounds a year to go on pub crawls!

The world really has gone mad.

In certain pubs, they will stand out like a sore thumb and get a good hiding for their pains.
