Canaries in the coal mine

From The American Thinker again.

It is often said that Jews are the canary in the coal mine of western civilization. When they start to be abused and mistreated, it is a sign that a poisonous atmosphere has developed that threatens to engulf all of society.

Well, women are the canary in the coal mine of lslamic civilization. And they are choking and dying across the Muslim world.

The most recent story, from Saudi Arabia, involves a 19-year-old woman who was kidnapped, beaten, and gang-raped by 7 men -- and then sentenced by a court to 90 lashes for the crime of being alone with a man not related to her. (See the Fox News report .)

When the Muslim world stops abusing and mistreating its women, we'll know they're ready for peaceful co-existence with the West. Until that day, we'd better keep our eyes open and our powder dry.

Recent reports have demonstrated that anti-Semitic attacks are on the rise worldwide and I do agree that this is an indicator of a growing problem for western civilisation, but I'd never really thought about whether the same could be said of women in Islamic society. I don't believe there has ever been a period of "peaceful co-existence" between western civilisation and Islam either. There have been periods where Islam was dominant and times when the west was dominant, but they've pretty much co-existed with their hands around each other's throats since around the 9th century. As far as I'm aware, the way Islamic society treats it's women has remained pretty much static for that entire time. The only difference now, is that, thanks to the Internet, we hear about what goes on.
