No - for once, I'm not referring to Islamonazis, but a different type of nazi. The Environazis. There is even a group, apparently, called "The Voluntary Human Extinction Movement".
OK - you go first, eh.
A new book by journalist Alan Weisman contemplates a world without people. In it he paints a paradise with wild animals thriving and roaming free, the climate perfectly balanced and the air fresh and clear.
Sound appealing? Well, it did to Weisman, too, when he began work on the book four years ago. And "four out of five" of the people he's told about it, he estimates, thought the idea sounded wonderful. Since we're headed inexorably toward an environmental crash anyway, why not get it over cleanly and allow the world to heal?
Oh, yeah, right. A paradise -except of course there wouldn't be any people around to care. What are these idiots on? Do they not realise that a world without humans is just another lump in space? What is the point of a world fit for human habitation if there are no humans to enjoy it? No other creature has the rational thought or awareness of the world to appreciate it. Paradise can only exist if there are humans to call it such.
Perhaps the most ridiculous thing, though, is that Weisman ignores one crucial fact. The earth is not a stable environment and never has been. Every 10,000 years or so the earth enters what are called "ice ages". Ever heard of them, Alan? Well, these ice ages come and go with a reasonable degree of regularity. They arrive quite abruptly, taking 30-50 years to form although it could be as little as 5-10 years - no one is quite sure yet.
However, we'll find out soon enough because this current warm period - the Holocene - has lasted 13,000 years and we're about due for a new ice age (and no, it won't be caused by man - it will be entirely natural and normal).
Once it strikes Mr Weisman's vision of a world without man may come true. One thing is certain - the human population of the earth will be devastated. Billions of people will die.
Now I'm not suggesting this is going to happen tomorrow or next week - but an ice age is overdue. With all the talk about predicting the outcome of "man-made" global warming it seems many have forgotten that natural global freezing is not just a possibility, but inevitable.
And an ice age can last for 100,000 years. Think about it.
