Avoiding the answer

As the inquest in to the 7/7 atrocity begins you can be sure of one thing.

It won't be anything to do with Islam or Moslems.

They'll blame poor communications between various organisations.

But it won't be anything to do with Islam or Moslems.

The police and security services will come in for criticism.

But it won't be anything to do with Islam or Moslems.

They'll probably find that there were failings by government.

But it won't be anything to do with Islam or Moslems.

They'll probably even manage to criticise the transport infrastructure and providers.

But it won't be anything to do with Islam or Moslems.

It never is.

According to our state broadcaster - or one of its distinguished correspondents - the naughty boys of 7/7 are only "misguided criminals". If you read John Simpson's article the only people he really condemns are those "who were stupid or inadequate enough to make threatening calls to Muslim organisations, or shout at Muslims in the street (or - such is their ignorance - at Sikhs as well)"

Now I happen to agree with Simpson's condemnation of those inadequates, but nasty phonecalls and insulting remarks don't actually kill you. Also, more interestingly, he cites Londoners' attitude to IRA bombs. What he fails to say is, of course, the similarity between the IRA and the 7/7 murderers. To - sort-of - quote Mao in respect of successful guerilla campaigns - terrorists are like fish swimming in water, the "water" being the tacit support of a vast number of supporters. The IRA "swam" in a substantial part of Northern Ireland's Catholic and Britain's Irish-Catholic community. The 7/7 murderers "swam" where exactly?
